Working Hard for Working Families
I was raised in Eaton County and have decided to raise my own family in Eaton County. I care about this community, and I want to help make it a better place to live in.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Political Theory & Constitutional Democracy and in Social Relations & Policy from James Madison College at Michigan State University. I have always had a deep interest in how legislation- big and small- impacts different communities. I would use my knowledge to make informed, balanced decisions as a commissioner.
Before dedicating myself to my children as a stay-at-home mother of two, I worked at a union for years and was a proud union member. I was raised in a union household as well and recognize the importance that bargaining units have in maintaining a strong middle class.
I think that transparency & effective communication are critical in order to have trust in government workings. If elected, I would focus much of my efforts on communicating with the public.
Mikaela is currently on the City of Charlotte planning commission, as well as the city's master plan steering committee. She is on the board of directors for Camp Frances in Charlotte. Mikaela is a member of the GFWC- Charlotte and volunteers with them throughout the year.

Some of our parks are neglected & rusted. All of the children in Eaton County deserve to play in beautiful, well-maintained parks. She thinks that our parks need to be more handicap accessible, need more trash bins for easy clean-up, and she believes that Eaton County could benefit from another Splash Pad.

According to the latest Eaton County Financial Stability Report, Eaton County is expected to have a 1.3-million-dollar shortfall for fiscal year 24-25. That means more pressure for increased taxes after commissioners sat on this knowledge that the county was struggling financially for years. Why should we pay for the mistakes of past commissioners? Have the commissioners explored ways to increase efficiency? Our residents cannot afford to continuously handle the burden of their local government's poor planning.

Mikaela Bliven is aware that our police are short staffed. She is a supporter of Backing the Blue Michigan and will work toward strengthening recruitment efforts. Mikaela would vote "yes" on officer raises. Recently, due to budget constraints, the Sheriff's office is limited on overtime and as a result are no longer operating the out-county 12 pm to 12 am shift. The Sheriff's office has been short staffed and relying on overtime for years. If elected county commissioner, Mikaela would support our officers to the best of her ability.
Eaton County has a great need for more mental health services. Increased services would help stop drug abuse & misuse in our community. The pandemic and resulting economic turmoil have taken a toll on the mental health of many. We need more services for our residents.
Eaton County was built on agriculture. We must support our farmers because the work that they do not only puts food on our table but helps our environment & local economy.
Mikaela's experience on the City of Charlotte Master Plan Steering Committee has taught her the importance of missing middle housing. Right now, housing is limited and very pricey. Our community would benefit from more duplexes, triplexes, cottage courts, and mix-use dwellings. An increase of supply of housing could drive the costs down.
